  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz can tomato paste
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet, sautΓ© the ground meat with onions and garlic until browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasoning. Simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally for deeper flavor.
  • Cook the Noodles: Boil lasagna noodles in salted water until al dente. Drain and lay flat on a baking sheet.
  • Mix the Cheese: In a bowl, combine ricotta, egg, half of the Parmesan, and half of the mozzarella.
  • Layer the Lasagna: In a baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce, followed by noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella. Repeat, ending with sauce and topping with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  • Bake: Cover with foil and bake at 375Β°F (190Β°C) for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 25 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden.
  • Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
